Mac reformatting problem?

i was experiencing some software hiccup with my mac. so i was trying to reformat. but when i booted up and was holding down the c key with my installation disc in the drive, 1 minute later a grey window appeared telling me to restart my mac again. despite several restarts, the window still appears. it seems i wont be able to boot my mac from the dvd. solutions?
