Why has Obama chosen class warfare vs. getting serious on cutting spending?

Class warfare rhetoric resonates with the Democratic party (especially its radical base). Serious spending cuts not only do not resonate with them but are bound to have many of them screaming bloody murder. It is anything but surprising to me that President Obama has chosen the former course over the latter.
